Image file extension for photoshop use
Their are a few image files webmaster uses. they are PNG, GIF and JPG. Here are the definitions and use for each image file extensions.
PNG(Portable Network Graphic)
PNG files don’t lose the quality of the image when it is compressed. PNG supports 16-bit and up to 48-bit color.
When using this extension it can compress about 10% to 23% more than GIF files. One thing about PNG is that it doesn’t support animation, it was
developed as an alternative for the GIF file.
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
GIF files are excellent for icons/navigation buttons and small animated images. They don’t have the color range to be used for high quality photos, because it is based on indexed colors; meaning with a palette of 256 colors at most. The small color range helps greatly reduce file size for quick transmission over the Internet. By the way, the compression formula used in GIF images was first developed by CompuServe, the reason why the term “CompuServe GIF” is used on the optimizing menu in Photoshop.
JPEG JPG(Joint Photographic Experts Group)
It is the name of the committee that developed the format. A JPEG file can contain data for vivid, high resolution image. The color palette in this extension is limitless. Some quality is lost when the image is compressed, which means it is a lossy format. The colors become noticeably “blurry” and some detail is lost, if the image is compressed too much. Photographic images are best compressed by this format since it contains limitless colors.
